Vintage Fabric and Threads at our Fundraiser Event - 29th April, Gorseinon Institute
Hi Swansea Festival of Stitch supporters. I thought I would be blogging sooner, but somehow Easter got in the way. Anyway, I just wanted to remind you that our Fundraising Coffee Morning at the Gorseinon Institute is on the 29th April. I know that there are going to be a few tables selling vintage fabrics and threads at the morning and that got me thinking about the importance textiles have in our lives. The feel of fabric against our skin is one of the first sensations we are aware of as a child. I was fortunate to have a Mum who loved dressmaking and making clothes for me, she showed me how to sew by hand and, in time, by machine. My Mum died almost 30 years ago but I have kept her old sewing threads, buttons, needles and haberdashery bits and bobs. They keep me connected to my Mum and I try to use them whenever I can. When we were clearing out my parents’ house after my Dad died, I found all the little napkins and tablecloths my Mum had embroidered. I’ve kept them along with a very special South Wales tablecloth which came out every Sunday for afternoon tea (ah, those were the days). To be able to use much loved vintage fabrics and threads in your own creative work is to give them a new life. Finding that special piece of fabric which is just right for a particular project is such a joyful thing. Call me an old romantic but I like the thought of these fabrics and threads living on in our work and being shared with others and so spreading the joy of making to your friends, family and a wider audience.
